Kansas Vote to Preserve Abortion Rights

Kansas voters turned out in huge numbers to defeat an anti-abortion constitutional amendment, signaling a major loss for anti-abortion groups and a warning for the GOP ahead of November midterms

DENVER — Yesterday, voters in Kansas turned out in extraordinary numbers to defeat an amendment removing the right to an abortion from the State Constitution. While the decisive 18-point margin of victory came as a surprise, the results serve as a warning to anti-abortion groups and the GOP about the possible backlash they face in the November elections as they continue to hedge their bets on a strategy of overturning abortion state-by-state.

Voices of Health Care Action Founder and Affordable Care Act Advocate Laura Packard issued the following statement:

“Last night’s decisive results from Kansas send a clear message to the ultra-conservative religious right, and to the GOP, that people all across the country – even in deep-red states – reject extreme bans on abortion. This win signals that attempts to rob Americans of their reproductive rights are a unifying issue for people of all political affiliations, because life-saving healthcare is a universal need.

The activists on the ground in Kansas were responsible for mobilizing this extraordinary voter turnout to protect the right to an abortion in the State Constitution. Now, we need to do the same across the country, and show up to elect reproductive rights champions down the ballot as we continue to fight for abortion rights.”
